Undergraduate language programmes in England: A widening participation crisis

England has a language education crisis: fewer people are studying languages at school and university programmes closing. This study analyses data from the Universities Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), UK admissions service for higher education. The quantifies how entry tariff socioeconomic background affect access to degree programmes. results show that (1) number of students offered correlate with (2) probability offering it range least five percentage less privileged backgrounds. Thus widening participation crisis is highlighted: while many young unable programmes, small proportion, highest tariffs, can choose languages. To combat crisis, Widening Participation Languages Network been launched, supporting universities below-average tariffs.
